The "Jamison Murders"

In 1899, there were a series of disappearances for which Clover Hill became infamous. The first one occurred on the night of Sunday, October 15, when three-year-old Cynthia Rollins was found to be missing from her bed. A search party was formed, to no avail. The following Sunday, Elena Cristians failed to return home. Things continued in this vein, with one child going missing every Sunday for the rest of the year. Upon the advent of the new century, the disappearances suddenly stopped.

Town authorities were completely at a lost for who was responsible. Due to pressure from the town's population, however, they arrested Emmet Jamison, a recluse who lived approximately two miles outside of Clover Hill. Searches of Jamison's property revealed no evidence of the missing children. It was put about that Jamison had confessed to murdering the children and feeding them to his livestock. Over three decades later, however, the mayor, on his deathbed, confessed that this had been mere fabrication.

Jamison was executed for mass murder on Friday, January 19 1900. The missing children were never found.
